Parent – Library Collaboration – An Important Piece of the Puzzle

Block C Session 1:10 – 2:10 PM

Fostering strong relationships with parents is a great way to connect families with the library and to find the support the library often needs. Parents can contribute in so many  different and effective ways. It is important that parents be a part of the puzzle that when complete, builds on student success. Join us for this exciting discussion panel where we look at two examples of how parent volunteers have had a major impact on elementary school libraries and how you can best build connections with your parents.

Ute Wilkinson

Ute discovered her love of school libraries the moment she became a volunteer for librarian Susan Singer at her children’s school, Edgewater Elementary. She eventually decided to become a librarian herself and obtained her MLIS from McGill in 2009. Since then, she has worked in both elementary and secondary libraries, and is currently sharing her time between Westwood Jr. High School and Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary School. At PETES, she is lucky to work with a very dedicated, knowledgeable and hard-working group of parent volunteers, including volunteer coordinator Lynn Dettmers, her co-presenter today.

Lynn Dettmers

Lynn has been actively volunteering at Pierre Elliot Trudeau Elementary School for over five years. She is a proud member of the Home & School Committee and is always happy to give her time and energy to enhance daily school life for children. She has participated in many different school projects, roles and initiatives, including assisting PETES librarian Ute Wilkinson as Library Coordinator. In addition, Lynn is a Student Supervisor and Daycare Replacement Educator at St. Patrick Elementary School. She strongly believes in creating a magical and inspiring learning environment for all children. Lynn is currently on maternity leave and is expecting her third child in early May.
