Maybe it’s the April showers or maybe it’s the hint of green grass coming up that’s making me feel like summer is around the corner. With the prospect of summer, teachers and administrators start asking about summer reading lists. Just to get yourself ahead of the game, you may want to take note of the Association for Library Services to Children’s (ALSC) reading lists for 2015. Admittedly, this is an American organization that is affiliated with ALA, so you may want to supplement your reading lists with titles suggested by Canadian sources.
As you can see from the illustration, three lists are available and they are free to download in black and white: Kindergarten – 2nd Grade list, 3rd through 5th grade, and 6th through 8th grade.
Summer reading has been shown to be so important for our students in maintaining their reading skills and not losing ground. Do try to convince your administrators to put summer reading lists prominently on your school board’s web site. I have a feeling that you will get a lot of cooperation for that!
