This film, created by Claire Baillargeon (bibliothecaire, CS de la Capitale), demonstrates how school libraries and classroom libraries can work in conjunction with one another to encourage the use of literature in classroom activities and foster a love of reading in students.  A variety of activities as well as a demonstration of how a school library can “feed” a classroom library with a rotating variety of books are shown through out this eight minute film.

In the film, teachers and librarians emphasize how important it is that students have a variety of books to choose from in order to make reading engaging. Student participation in the selection of books for the library is discussed as well.

The focus of the film is the idea that both school and classroom libraries are needed to ensure that there is enough fiction and nonfiction for students to choose from in order to support the curriculum as well as give students a taste of the exciting worlds that books can offer.

This film is a great demonstration of  the kind of collection development that is in line with the CLA standards of Fostering Literacies and Facilitating Collaborative Engagement. You can earn digital badges in these areas through QSLiN.org too. The previous links will take you right to those badge websites, but if you want to know more about getting started with the easy, pace-it-yourself Library Learning Commons Digital Badges, here is the link for the opening page that will explain how you can get started with a short video: https://qslin.org/digital-badging/.

You may be surprised at the discoveries you will make by doing the badge program. Not only will you gain a greater understanding of the CLA Standards, you’ll find many practical ideas for implementing them in your library.
