That marvelous day of fright and delight is soon to be upon us. There are numerous ways of tying in libraries, reading and goblins, and I am certain you have thought of a few. I came across programs that are tied specifically to reading. Sometimes it takes just a few well-chosen lines to create a reader…

Candy in schools can be a no-no. What if there were a way around this while encouraging reading, a candy of the non-caloric sort? Trick or Reaters (pun intended…) has found a way to do just this. Their reading candy comes in the shape of free downloadable flyers (in glorious black and white illustrations) to hand out to Trick or Reaters. The flyers and bookmarks link to their site which offers more than100 book excerpts to tease kids 3 to 14 into asking for more, please. Users select titles using the Age-o-Meter or, my favourite, the Scare-o-Meter. Take a minute to check out the info about the authors as well as free downloadable activities linked to the excerpts. Please note that no sign-in or account creation are required!

My second suggestion comes from library super hero and staunch defender of all things bookish, Neil Gaiman. The site where all this reading mayhem is stored is : All Hallows Read. It’s a great resource for book suggestions of the scary sort from pre-K to YA. The extra section offers a printable poster and stickers as well as some activity suggestions. Why not get on the bandwagon? Offer a book or host a book-exchange for Halloween.
